We often get asked how to know when you are going too far into a stretch and should stop. Although everyone’s tolerance is different, we are going to try to provide some guidance below.
Many people believe in the old saying “no pain no gain”; however, it does not apply to stretching.
You should be looking for a sensation of discomfort in your muscles, but never sharp and/or intense pain. Pain is your body’s mechanism of signalling something is wrong... listen to it!
Pushing past sharp and/or intense pain will often cause injuries and set you back on your flexibility journey. It’s not worth it!
Another feeling to watch out for is bones grinding against other bones. Remember, you are trying to stretch your muscles - not destabilize or deform your joints!
